چکیده

We study the separation of TCP flows into short lived and long lived ones, and the subsequent allocation of bandwidth to reflect the dynamically changing load due to short lived flow fluctuations. Three schemes are presented to assist in determining and allocating the bandwidth to short lived flows. Each one represents a different compromise in terms of state and execution complexity. However, all three share the common assumption that they can exploit knowledge of the statistical properties of what constitutes a “typical” short lived TCP flow. We argue that this assumption is totally within reason and hinges on the fact that short lived TCP flows are HTTP connections that have been extensively studied and their statistics are increasingly well understood. We finally present an evaluation of the three proposed schemes against DropTail and RED and determine that all three provide, to varying degrees, reduced response time to the short lived flows. Since short lived flows are predominantly instantiated by interactive applications, we argue that the reduced response time demonstrated by the proposed schemes is in good agreement with the most pressing performance concern of these applications, i.e., short delays.

A-priori Flow Bandwidth Estimates for Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation in Isp Access Links

In this paper we study a-priori bandwidth estimation algorithms for TCP flows. An RTT-based bandwidth allocator is proposed, which outperforms a broad class of peak-rate and static allocation flow switching solutions. Our findings suggest that a-priori bandwidth estimation (i.e, before the TCP data transfer phase takes place) is indeed feasible and serves to design simple, yet efficient, dynami...

TCP over High Speed Variable Capacity Links: A Simulation Study for Bandwidth Allocation

New optical network technologies provide opportunities for fast, controllable bandwidth management. These technologies can now explicitly provide resources to data paths, creating demand driven bandwidth reservation across networks where an applications bandwidth needs can be meet almost exactly. Size-based Adaptive Bandwidth Allocation: Optimizing the Average QoS for Elastic Flows

With a view on improving user perceived performance on networks supporting elastic flows, e.g., multimedia/data file transfers, we identify the key properties that an online dynamic bandwidth allocation policy should have. We then propose a family of bandwidth allocation criteria which depends on the residual work of on-going transfers. Analysis and simulations show that allocating bandwidth in...

Proposal for Adaptive Bandwidth Allocation Using One-Way Feedback Control for MPLS Networks

In this research, we focused on fair bandwidth allocation on the Internet. The Internet provides communication services based on exchanged packets. The bandwidth available for each customer is often fluctuated. Fair bandwidth allocation is an important issue for ISPs to gain customer satisfaction. Static bandwidth allocation allows an exclusive bandwidth for specific traffic. Although it gives ...

Understanding BGP Session Robustness in Bandwidth Saturation Regime

The reliability and robustness of the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) play very important roles in achieving highly stable and prompt Internet data communication. The present BGP uses TCP/IP to exchange routing control information. These routing control messages are usually not differentiated from the normal data packets in Internet packet forwarding, and this makes BGP sensitive to severe networ...
